Cloth tape describes a broad category of tape products including some of the strongest and most versatile tapes made today. One type of cloth tape is duct tape, the popular, waterproof tape used by millions to make many different repairs around the house. Duct tape is made with a fabric mesh layer, a rubber adhesive, and a plastic top layer. Despite the fact that it can be ripped by hand, the tape is very strong and durable. Duct tape now comes in several colors and styles and has become quite popular withcrafters and home improvement enthusiasts.
Gaffers tape is another type of cloth tape. It is similar to duct tape in construction, but usually has a matte black finish so that it can't be seen from the audience. A gaffer uses this tape to secure electrical cords, scenery and accessories on a stage or set.
Spike tape is very thin gaffers tape that comes in a large variety of colors. It is used to indicate actors' marks and stage placement and can be easily removed without leaving residue. Another type of cloth tape used by the entertainment industry is camera tape. This waterproof tape is used to seal and prevent light from entering film canisters.
Glass cloth tape is strong and temperature resistance. It is often flame resistant as well, making it ideal for use in the aviation industry. It is often used to secure fabric or other texture materials together in high temperature areas.
Double sided cloth tape is used in the construction industry for a variety of applications, most notably carpet installation. A strong adhesive is used to hold carpet and flooring seams together.
There are many more specialty cloth tapes. Adhesive strength and thickness vary depending on the intended application, but cloth tapes are the workhorses of the tape world!
